What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address that you’d type into an internet browser to reach your site.  For example, the domain of this website is www.bloggersguild.com.

Choosing a domain name for your blog should be a fun and engadging process that describes your new blog.  For those looking to maximize SEO, add your niche keyword into your title (bloggersguild.com – a site about blogging).

Some people may just choose to use their name, such as mollyfisher.net.  If the .com of your domain name is already taken, you can choose to change the extension (get a .blog , .me, .cc).

A good blog name will paint a picture for the visitor, as they know this is what they are looking for.

Spaces are not allowed in domain names, however you can use a hyphen, or a dash – such as bloggers-guild.com.

Once you have a topic it’s time to choose your blog address.  This is called a domain name.  Check here to see if your name is available.

A good blog name should be descriptive

Selecting a blog name should be done after you have decided on a blog niche.  It’s a good idea to include a  niche keyword in the domain address, however it doesn’t have to as long as it is describing your blog.  Other ideas for blog names include using your personal name mollyfisherblog.com.  Examples include:  blogsforbeginners.com , myfishblog.com

Once you have some name ideas you will need to choose a domain extension.

After you’ve got some ideas, you’ve got to decide on an extension.  .COM, .NET, and .ORG are considered top tier domains. However, there are hundreds of extensions to choose from – .net, .org, .co, .cc, .tech, .website .blog , etc.  Also, remember a domain name cannot include spaces.  However you can include hyphens (molly-fisher.blog).
